Pepernoten

Pepernoten (Gingernuts) are a traditional candy here in the Netherlands. From the time that Sinterklaas (St Nicholas) enters the country children receive Pepernoten from Sinterklaas.

Sinterklaas is an annual event which has been uniquely Dutch and Flemish for centuries. Sinterklaas, St Nicholas’ Eve (December 5th) is celebrated nationwide by young and old. It’s in the Netherlands bigger then Christmas or Easter. It’s our number 1 holiday.

Down below is the recipe for Pepernoten. Try them and let me know what you think, enjoy.

Ingredients:
- 125g flour
- 1 tbs milk
- Teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp treacle
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tbs speculaas spices
- 50g brown sugar
- 25g butter

Preheat your oven to 180 - 220 c. Put all the ingredients in a the same bowl. Make your hands wet and then mix all the ingredients until it becomes a dough that doesn’t stick on your hands. Then the fun part starts make 3 cm by 3 cm balls of the dough. Make sure you all ready greased the baking tray. Put the balls on the tray and push gently so one side of the ball is flat. Now you have a Pepernoot. When finished put the Pepernoten in the oven for 20 min. After there done in the oven let them cool down for about 10 min.
